Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to audition?
There are no auditions for the Lyra Voices Groups. You can just book, come along and join in. We sing together as a group so, don’t worry, you won’t be asked to sing by yourself.
Entry to the Songbirds @Lyra Performance Group is by audition only. Details available on request at info@lyravoices.co.uk
Do I need to be able to read music?
No, we teach all of the songs by ear, and don’t use printed scores, so you don’t have to be able to read sheet music.
Do I need to be a good singer?
Lyra Voices Groups
We help women to develop confidence in themselves and their voices and to enjoy the experience of singing together. We teach techniques and exercises that will help you to build on and strengthen your voice, so don’t worry about what stage your voice is at currently. All our classes contain ladies at different levels of experience, including complete beginners.

Songbirds @Lyra Performance Group
Membership of this group is by audition. Simply express your interest in the group by emailing us. We will then invite you to attend for an individual and group audition. If successful, we’ll provide you with information on how to set up your membership, including your weekly class payment.
I don’t have much experience and I’m worried about whether I’ll be able to keep up with the class
Our Lyra Voices classes are aimed at all levels of singers, including those with less experience and complete beginners, and run at a pace to suit the needs of the group. You can ask questions as we go along and we’ll happily go over sections again at any point. When you sign up for the term you will have access to a members’ area for the group where, among other resources, we upload audio tracks and teaching videos of the songs we are singing. This will give you the opportunity to get to know the songs better and practise between classes.
Will I have opportunities to perform?
Although we have a dedicated performance group (Songbirds @Lyra) members of the Lyra Voices Groups will also have the chance to take part in performances. We have performed at a variety of charity events over the years and continue to provide opportunities to showcase the songs we have been working on. In the Lyra Voices Groups, performance is not mandatory but we have found that most people who start off feeling reticent quickly become addicted to what is an incredibly enjoyable experience!
Are the Groups accessible?
- Yes. We endeavour to ensure that our venues and website are accessible for all. Please let us know, when booking your free place, if you have any mobility issues, so we can provide you with details about access to the building.
- We are able to accommodate assistance dogs at the classes. Again, please let us know when you book.
- We can also provide large print copies of all of our materials, should you require these.
If you have any other requirements, please let us know.
Email us at: info@lyravoices.co.uk or phone/text us on 07714 459 243.
What should I wear?
Avoid wearing tight clothing that restricts your breathing. High heels will alter your posture and can be uncomfortable to stand in, introducing unnecessary tension. Wear something you feel comfortable in, that allows you to move freely.
Be mindful of other participants and, if possible, please try to avoid wearing strongly scented perfumes, deodorants etc. These can cause breathing difficulties for some people.
Is there anything I need to bring to a group?
It is important to keep your throat hydrated when you are singing, so make sure to bring some water with you to a class.
When you attend a group, we will provide you with a folder and copies of the lyrics for the songs we are singing. To save paper, please bring these with you every week.
Can I come along and observe a group?
We ask that everyone who attends our groups, participates. You will get much more out of a group by taking part, and being observed can be off-putting for other participants, who are also learning. Our singing groups are very relaxed, and you will quickly get the hang of things!
What if I can’t start right away?
In the meantime, until you can join us, we have a selection of free resources available to help you get started, including singing tips and exercises. Sign up at our Resources and Membership to get access to these.
